Thefts of lead from local church roofs

There have, in recent weeks, been many incidents of thefts of lead from churches. Salisbury Cathedral and Malmesbury Abbey have been targeted, as well as smaller churches in our part of the County. In one well publicised incident, which has its amusing side, two thieves were caught and arrested when members of the congregation were taking part in a prayer vigil and became aware of noises on the roof late at night!

May I ask those villagers living in the vicinity of our church to be vigilant, please, and to report any suspicious behaviour to the Police (using the 101 number) or to me. Thank you.

Suspicious behaviour in the Old Village

A resident living in the Old Village has reported suspicious behaviour which took place at 12.20 lunchtime on 23rd September. (My wife and I have been away, which is why I have been unable to deal with this matter before now.)

On the small gravel drive which links Bradford Road to 116, 117, 118 and 119 Winsley a man, who was on a motor cycle, stopped and, without dismounting, spent several minutes looking around the properties, especially the upstairs windows. He then took out a ‘phone and took a photo of the front door of one of the houses. The man then turned the motorbike round and drove back on to the Bradford Road.

The rider is described as a white male, in his late 40s or early 50s, with a grey stubbly beard. He was wearing a black leather jacket and jeans and a half face, dark coloured helmet. The motorbike was a blue and white Yamaha and around 125cc. in engine capacity. The number plate was blacked out with mud and/or grease.

This incident was reported to, and recorded by, the Police. I do warmly commend the resident for these clear descriptions and for taking prompt action.

If anyone can throw any light on this incident, or has witnessed anything similar, could they please let me know. Thank you.

As you know, I shall be relinquishing the role of NW Co-ordinator for Winsley and the surrounding area at the end of the year. So far, no-one has come forward as a volunteer to replace me. If anyone is interested, or would just like to know what is involved, please do make contact.
